Dogs can be wonderful additions to the family, and like most family members, they can get into all sorts of mischief.
Nikki, had once again gotten into the garbage, which necessitated an emergency vet visit. Nikki's "mom" wasn't impressed with the expensive escapade.
Being the good mom she is, the following day Janet was cooking for Nikki, to accomodate Nikki's still upset stomach.
Janet put a small saucepan with the chicken bits on the stove and turned the gas on. She saw it catch, then turned it down to simmer.
The phone rang, Janet answered it and then rushed upstairs. She came down and the phone rang again. When she hung up, there was Nikki in the living room doorway, whining. Janet thought she had to go out, and started into the family room, holding a cigarette.Nikki became extremely agitated, barking and jumping. She hates it when Janet smokes, so Janet put the cigarette out. Nikki was barking constantly and didn't want to let Janet in the kitchen. By then Janet could smell gas. Janet didn't know how the flame went out but it had, and she could barely make it to the door to open it. Nikki immediately ran to the edge of the patio and barked until Janet joined her outside.
Nikki quite likely saved Janet's life that day. If Janet had walked into the family room with a lit cigarette who knows what could have happened?
Nikki proudly wears the title, "Boxer Hero".
