Guildford Castle

Photo of the George Abbot temporarily unavailable

One of the oldest public houses in Guildford, although rebuilt in 1808 it was already known to be ancient then. It has been known as 'The Row Barge' and 'The Jolly Sailor', becoming the Greyhound at the time of the 1808 reconstruction. The name probably came from the fact that until the 18th Century a silver greyhound badge was worn on the sleeves of the kings messengers. The building went under another rebuild a couple of years ago with a couple of shops next door being incorporated into the building as well as it being renamed The George Abbot after Guildford's famous son, the 17th century Archbishop of Canterbury.
