Alana was abandoned at birth by her parents. She was found on the edge of an Amazon village by Margot, a human sorceress. A nearby physician was consulted and thought Alana to be just days old. Margot and the other Amazon women took poor Alana in, named her, and provided for her. The women taught her that men are inherently useless and are only good for mating. Women were by far superior. Men were kept in her village as slaves and for mating purposes.
As a child, Alana loved watching Margot and her friends cast spells. It was fun watching them try and outwit each other. Alana also enjoyed playing with the other children in the village. Their favorite activity was going to the swimming hole at the edge of the village. It was so much fun to splash around. They occasionally raced each other and Alana often won.
When Alana turned 9 years old, Margot asked her if she would like to be trained as a mage. Alana was very excited by the prospect and Margot began by teaching her to read and write. Alana studied hard, but always took time to play with her friends. Once basic reading and writing were mastered, Margot started on basic spells. Alana got the basics down, but hadn't cast any spells yet. Every time she tried, she fumbled it.:
Alana was turning into an intelligent, pretty young lady. One day when Alana was 13, she went to the swimming hole alone. She laid at the edge of the hole, with her head on the embankment and fell asleep. She was awoken by a group of adventurers - men! She hadn't seen men who looked like this before, they all had pointy ears. She looked up at them and said in as confident a voice as she could muster, "Leave here at once, I have no need for you." The men laughed heartily. She was so mad, she just had to try and get them to take her seriously. She made some gestures and muttered the words she had muttered failingly so many times before. Suddenly a fan of flames burst from her hands. The men quickly jumped back out of the way. One of them had been slightly singed. A huge smile of success leapt to Alana's face. She was so excited that she squealed and forgot her immediate danger. Just then, several adults from the community appeared for a swim. The males were apprehended and brought back to the village as slaves. Margot chose one named Darlfin as her personal slave.
Darlfin begged Margot daily to release him. He had a wife and kids and just wanted to get home to them. Alana asked Darlfin many questions. What is a wife? Was his wife his slave? Why would a woman submit to a man? Alana grew to realize that Darlfin was a caring man and that he truly cared about his female. Maybe not all men were useless. She was too kind hearted to let him suffer the way he was. Darlfin had been Margot's slave for a month when Alana helped him to escape. He asked her to go with him, but she refused. During a town meeting most of the adults attended, Alana and Darlfin made their move. Alana helped him get to the edge of town. Just as he was about to leave, he decided Alana was coming with him. Alana was no match for Darlfin, she had no choice but to go with him. After several weeks of trekking through the woods, they came upon a small village. A child seeing Darlfin approach the village, started running around, "Darlfin's home! Darlfin's home!" A woman and 2 children emerged from one of the homes. Seeing Darlfin, their eyes lit up and they ran to him. Alana was really surprised by this woman's reaction to Darlfin. It seemed she really did want him there.
Shortly after arriving at her new "home", Alana jotted down a rough sketch of their journey. She would return home someday. She attempted to escape several times, but was always caught. She was treated as a child, not a slave. Darlfin's wife, Talia, was an excellent cook and taught her how. Darlfin tried to make Alana as happy as possible. Remembering that she was learning to become a spellcaster, he inquired of a friend as to whether Alana could apprentice him. When Alana heard of the chance, she was first excited and then flat out refused to work with the man. Darlfin was discouraged. He didn't know any female spellcasters. He couldn't let Alana go back, he had to show her a better way of life with harmony between men and women.
Alana was becoming more and more depressed about the absence of study. After approximately 10 months she half-heartedly asked Darlfin to request another apprenticeship of his friend. The day after her 14th birthday, Alana started her apprenticeship with Nigel, a militant wizard. Nigel was extremely patient with Alana and found that she had a good knowledge foundation. He taught her to use a sling and cast spells useful for protecting herself. Alana apprenticed Nigel for several years and occasionally went on adventures with him. Since Nigel was such a good teacher, Alana's view of men changed somewhat. She no longer thought they were useless, but they still weren't superior or even equal. Nigel was someone she was using to further herself. When Alana turned 16, she decided it was time to leave the community. Darlfin was extremely upset and wouldn't allow her to go. Several months later, a group of men and women from the community were setting out to explore the world together. Alana asked Darlfin if she may join them. Darlfin was skeptical, but decided that she was almost an adult and should be left to do as she wished. So Alana went off to explore the world. She was with the group no more than 2 weeks when she decided to take off in search of her real home, the one with Margot.
It took 2 months of wandering around in the woods alone before she found her home. Margot was so happy to see her little? girl! Sure enough, Alana was now a beautiful young lady. Alana explained what had happened to her. She showed Margot how advanced she had become. However, Alana found her views on men poorly received. She realized that this small village where she grew up was no longer her home. So, Alana visited with Margot for a month and then took off in search of adventure. Margot knew of a city east of their village and Alana headed in that direction looking for adventure.
