Richard Cawthorne III, the Immigrant, owned 500 acres of land in Essex County, Virginia which his will divided between his two sons, Richard IV and Thomas. It appears that Richard perhaps, gave to some of his sons their part of his land as they grew to manhood. Be that as it may, James Cauthorn received about 45 acres which was not enough to support his family. He bought 220 acres from James Mills, but still he was not satisfied with his prospect in Essex County.
By 1760 most of the good land in Virginia east of the mountains, and even into the Shenandoah Valley, had been taken up; Indians were troublesome on the frontier and markets difficult to reach. Some Virginians had discovered that there was good land across the state line in North Carolina, and since the 1750's settlers had been pouring into the northern tier of counties.
We do not know how James Cauthorn knew about the land there, or whether he was acquainted with people who had settled there, but we do know that in January 1767 he made a trip to the region. There, about six miles across the Virginia state line in Bute, now called Warren County, he found a site that he liked. By a deed dated February 5th, 1767 which named his as "James Cauthorn of the County of Essex in the Colony of Virginia" he bought 200 acres in what was, and still is, a fine agricultural section. He bought from Blanchflower Duncan who might have been from Essex. The new land adjoined that of Dawson Vanlandingham who had come not long before from Fairfax Co., VA. Samuel Hammond from Fairfax Co., Va., but who had originally come from Richmond Co., VA, just across the Rappahannock River from Essex, had settled close by just a year or two before. He returned to Essex County and sold his land to his brother Vincent.
James had married Elizabeth before leaving Essex County and had 11 children. Three of these children would live to fight in the Revolutionary War. They were;
