Out of ideas for service projects? Here are a few tried and tested projects.
At the end of the school year we collected all of the used school supplies that the students are planning to throw away. We sent a note home with each student in the school telling the parents about our project. This way the parents could tell their children which items they wanted them to donate and which items to bring home. We gave each teacher a box to collect her classes donations. We emptied overflowing boxes and stored them in a room the school supplied for us until the end of the school year. The response was overwhelming! We collected crayons, markers, glue sticks, glue bottles, notebooks, backpacks, lunchboxes, school boxes, games, etc.
After collecting all of the donations, 3 or 4 of the troop leaders got together to sort through the piles of school supplies. This made things much easier when cleanup day arrived.
During the summer we gathered as many of the Girl Scouts as possible at a leaders house to begin the cleanup. We had different stations set up. For example, crayon sharpening, pencil sharpening, marker testing, lunchbox and backpack cleanup, notebook cleanup (taking used pages out of the books), etc. The girls could work in one area for a while and then move on to work in a different area. We scheduled the session for about 2 hours. This also gave the girls a break time to enjoy a snack and run around outside for a few minutes.
After the cleanup was completed the supplies were taken to a school where the students were not able to afford to purchase these supplies. The school and students were very greatful. We are trying to coordinate it to be a Council-wide activity.
