Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

August 27, 1998

There's no telling when I'm going to get to upload this. You see, our hard drive crashed a few days ago.

Well, not ALL the hard drives. Just the C drive. You know--the one with the operating system on it.

We are luckier than most because Delton had the other computer which he wasn't using because his video card had died. So, he took both cases to his favorite computer shop and had his 2.1 gig C drive installed in this computer and we still have the D drive mostly functional. The only thing is...the OS in this system WAS windows 95. Now it's win 3.1--workshop for windows. And I'm not sure how to do certain things on this.

One thing about win 95, they made it easy to get into the system and fiddle around. I need to get this computer to recognize the modem. Unfortunately, the floppy for the modem that is in here is missing (Anyone have a floppy for an Atlas 33.6 that they can copy and send?), and I don't know how to make this machine recognize a standard modem. It will run slower...but, at least it should run. I guess that I'll let Delton handle that.

I think he tried (unsucessfully) to reinstall win 95 from the the backup CD we had gotten from the computer company last year. You see, when he bought this computer, it was a returned and refurbished machine. Not all the discs and CDs were with it. The most prominent one that was missing was the CD for win 95. So, we had to get a backup from the company. I think that Delton tried to use the CD to reinstall win95 last night...without success.

So, now, we just have to figure out how to get things so that we can get online again.

Lucky me. I had almost all my personal files (this template that I made, all the stuff for my website, pictures, etc.) on the D drive. And lucky for Faye that I installed Eudora, Juno, and Free Agent on the D drive. I only hope that we didn't lose the use of them because of hidden files that installed themselves on the C drive or perhaps some shared .dll files that are gone.

We did lose Netscape, IE (which is replaceable from floppys), the scanner, the printer files (even though our printer died, our Mom has the same make and model--so, if we really needed a printer, we borrowed hers.), and, of course, our hookup to our isp. Most of the stuff I can reinstall easily enough if I can figure out how to make this system recognize it.
