Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

January 25, 1997

Today is Carrie's 10th birthday. One of the presents that I gave her was a written IOU. I promised to put up a web page for her as soon as I am caught up with my online duties. She is thrilled with it!

If this entry appears choppy, it's because, on weekends, I have to catch the computer whenever it isn't being used by someone else. So, I am writing this while trying to cook a fried chicken dinner.

I haven't really finished a book since the beginning of the year. It's not that I'm not reading...it's that the reading has been in different books. I just haven't finished one entire book even though I've read several hundred pages.

The two books that I will probably finish first are Swan Song and the rereading of The Wastelands.

When I first started reading the Stephen King newsgroup, someone had written that if one enjoyed The Stand, one would LOVE Robert R. McCammon's Swan Song. Of course, this had the effect of making me curious and I had searched the Public Library in vain for the book.

When my IRC friend was here in December, we went to a new and used bookstore together. She bought me Swan Song as a Christmas present. At page 400, I am close to half-way through the book. I am enjoying the book; but, I am not loving the book the way I loved The Stand.

To me, King's character's are much more compelling. McCammon does a fair to good job on the characterizations of the main characters, but, the secondary characters are shadowy in comparison.

King has long been criticized for his plot lines. But, the reason why he is so popular is that he is a master storyteller who's characterizations and narration are so well done, that minor glitches in the plotline are overlooked in the overall story.

I will continue to reread King.

Swan Song is beginning to get really interesting in more than one place now. Whether or not I will wish to reread it remains to be seen. If I do decide to reread it at a later date, there will be large parts (mainly about the survivalists) that I will skip over.

Well, I gotta go finish dinner. And the Super Bowl is over. My son's team lost.
