"Wet Springs"
We broke 100+ days straight of rain day before yesterday! Talk 'bout things bein' "all wet". The rivers are near flood stage, if they haven't slipped on over all ready. Homes are slidin' down hillsides due to the saturation levels of the soil. Roads are shut down due to these same mudslides and are warped or cracked everywhere.
But yesterday, the sun came out 'round here. It took it all day to get a look at what's been happenin'. Folks, who've been screamin' in their brains, for sunshine finally got their wish.
Even at 34 degree's, it's a whole lot better than rainin'. The vehicles on the street were all frosted over, most folks had a heck of a time gettin' their car doors open 'cause the moisture left over had frozen the locks.
Me, I sat here in my office watchin' the sun rise. The bare, brown blackberry vines looked cold, even after the sun light reached 'em. Our local ducks started squawkin' their relief (imagine that, ducks tired of the rain!) The sky held a few wisps of staggered cloud lines, but otherwise was as blue as blue could be.
So, on the first sunny day of the year, I returned to the work I brought home that I need to have finished by Monday. By 2PM, eyeball weary and brain cells fried, I wandered out onto the front porch and sat down. With a cup of fresh coffee in one hand and a lit smoke in the other, I listened for the absence of man made sounds.
Fortunately, it was a quiet moment in the neighborhood. No kids yellin' at each other across the street, no vehicle engines firin' up, no skateboards or "Big Wheels" rumblin' their way across the gravelly pavement.
My eyes took in the beauty of nature, what little of it that remained within this distance to be seen. A slight breeze, cool in it's winter's way, came around the corner of the house and snaked it's way around my collar. I flipped up the collar and leaned onto the house siding, warmed ever so slightly by the afternoon sun.
Yep, I'm ready for spring to get here. Ready for not havin' to put on a jacket everytime I step outside. Ready for taking a walk with the dog that doesn't bring us both back muddy and wet all over. Ready to open up some windows and let in the fresh, warm air. But most of all, I'm ready to come out of another winter's hibernation and seek the food that nourishes me most......exporin' the wonders of nature!
