Emery Aaron Gunnin


February 27, 1916 - May 24, 1971

Emery Aaron Gunnin was born in Starr, South Carolina.
He was the son of William Emery Gunnin (b. Jan 14, 1883 d. Jan 18, 1966) and
Permelia Zeolia Morgan (b. May 29. 1879 d. May 3, 1945).

He graduated from Starr High School as Valedictorian, Class of 1933.
For ten years he followed in his fathers footsteps and worked as a brick mason and supervisor
in construction work throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until 1946. He was stationed aboard the USS Register APD 92 with the Navigation Division. After his discharge he attended Clemson College and earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering in 1950 and a Masters in Civil Engineering in 1954.
Emery spent the rest of his life as Professor and Executive Officer of the School of Architecture, Clemson College. He was a member of the American Institue of Architects of South Carolina as a Registered Architect and Engineer. He served as Vice-Chairman of the South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners and was a member of Hermon Lodge 116, A.F.M.


Emery was married to Dorothy Jane Gambrell on March 16, 1940. They had three children:

Emery A. Gunnin, Jr.
William Wesely Gunnin
Patricia Jane Gunnin

One of the greatest honors bestowed on Emery and our family was the
naming of the Architectural Library after him.
