A search engine is a device for searching data bases. You may also see them refered to as web worms or web
crawlers. There are two kinds. Individual which
searches one data base and Meta or Mega and these
search more than one data base at one search.
How does one know or learn the best way to search for
information? This is just a little of what I have
learned through trial and error. If you can't find
what you're looking for on a general engine look for
a specialized engine. For instance my son was
looking for information on his hero, special effects
artist Rick Baker. We looked in one of the best
individual general search engines and it gave
references to sites with information on Rick Baker a
golf pro and one listing to a site with information
on the Rick Baker he was looking for but it was a
German page. We went to one of the most popular
general meta search engines that searched 25 other
general search engines and found three sites
containing information on Rick Baker the special
effects artist but alas they were all in foriegn
languages. We then went to a specialized engine that searched movie data and there found several sites
that contained his bio, all the movies he had worked
on in his career and all of the awards he had won
throughout his career.
How does one go about finding a specialized engine?
I am going to give you a link to Beaucoup which is a
list with links to over a thousand search engines!
If you are looking for information on a journalist
scroll down to the list of "media" engines and you
will find several specalized engines there with
nothing but data on newspaper articles and
journalists.
Meta Search. Why search one data base when you can
search five or 25 at once? I am going to give you a
link to Freeality Meta Searches which is a page with
a long list of general multiple search engines that
can all be searched from the same page. If you click on the name of the engine it will take you to that
engines Home Page where you can find all the engines
it searches. However remember it is not necessary to go to the Home Page as they ALL can be conviently
searched from the Main Meta Searches page in the
boxes provided. I personally start my searches with
Inference Find because it is a good engine and
searches a few but most of all I like the way it
lists its results best. If I don't find what I'm
looking for there I go up a couple of spaces and try
my favorite, Dogpile, which searches 25 at once.
Experiment, try typing the same query into all of
them and compare results. If you try a few and
aren't having much luck go to Beaucoup and look for a
list of more specialized engines. Book mark both of
these and that should take care of all your search
needs. ogie says, "Happy hunting!"

penCentral is one of the most unique sites I have
come across in my surfing career. Put together by a
computer whiz that uses webtv named penryn from
Austin, Texas. penryn's penCentral site is still
under construction and as good as the three sections
he has open now are I can not wait to see what he
will come up with next. penryn has compiled the best
list of Webtv newsgroups I have seen. These can be
found by clicking on his NEWSGROUPS catagory on
penCentrals main page. The most concise, articulate,
easy to understand listing of each newsgroup you will find. Period. If you can't find a newsgroup of
interest to you in penCentral you don't need to be
looking at newsgroups. Every interest from bland to
bizarre is listed there. penryn practices what he
preaches and you can find him participating in some
of these newsgroups. I enjoy seeing his sometimes
interesting, sometimes humorous and sometimes
humorously interesting posts in alt.x.y. Webbies new
and old need to check out penCentral's list of Webtv
newsgroups.
In addition to penCentral's Webtv newsgroups
penCentral has World Wide News from many different
Countries around the world in RealAudio broadcasts,
even from The Vatican! And if that were not enough
even in Spanish! With a link to a Newstand, Magazine
Rack, News Broadcasts and Newsgroups penCentral just
about has ALL the NEWS covered! All you Webtvers Hear all the latest World Wide News from around the globe
as it happens. All this can be done by clicking on
