Title: Should We Forgive Clinton? In a word the answer is yes -- If President Clinton has sought our forgiveness, it is our responsibility and privilege to forgive. This brings up two more questions: Did he ask for forgiveness? And if we do forgive him should he remain in office? Neither of these are as simple to answer. First, did President Clinton ask forgiveness on Monday, August 17, 1998? The wording of the speech, the tone of defiance and the attempt to shift the blame to Mr. Starr has left me and many others wondering if the President really was asking for forgiveness or if he was doing, like some many do, and avoiding responsibility for sin. Each of us will come to our own conclusions to this question. But even if he did ask for forgiveness, what should happen to him? This decision may not and should not rest on our opinion or on public opinion, but on the law. If the President broke the law, then clearly he should not remain in office. What if he didn't break any laws? We still have a problem. A problem that many Americans are overlooking. The President of the United States lied. He lied to the people who elected him. I agree with Rev. Nathan Baxter, dean of Washington National Cathedral, "The most important characteristic of leadership in a democracy is the ability to demonstrate morally accountable character." (USA Today, Aug. 24, 1998, p. 4A) The sex thing is bad, but there is also the moral leadership of telling the American people the truth. Some will point out that he lied for his family, to keep them from hurt. No! He lied to his family and to keep from confessing to sin! Please, don't tell me he lied for his family. For seven months his life was nothing but a lie -- Ask Hillary! No! If you want to keep from hurting your family, then remain loyal! The most important characteristic needed for the office of husband and the office of President is trust. Trust comes from honesty -- Hello, do you here me -- Truthfulness! He has lost that trust with his family, his nation, and more important with the world. Can he gain it back? Not with avoiding the truth. Moses struck the rock twice and because of that was not allowed into the promise land. David was a bloody warrior therefore he could not build the temple. Sin always carries an earthly consequence. It was so of the great men of the Bible and it will be so of President Clinton. Former Vice President Dan Quayle may be right, he may have disqualified himself. Whatever marks President Clinton wanted history to remember him by has been replaced with sex and lying. Yes, President Clinton needs forgiveness, from the Lord, from his wife and daughter, from his staff, from the American people. I pray he seeks it and receives it. But most of all I pray he will do what is best for the country. Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. - James 4:17 What do you think?
