The Will of John Hall

Amelia County Virginia

February 13, 1779

 

In the name of God Amen. I John Hall of the County of Amelia and Parish of Holloway, being weak of body but of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this last will and testament and as touching such worldly goods wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, give and devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form;--First I lend my wife Elizabeth during her natural life the following slaves, (to wit) Phillis, Joabels and Brister, also the use of the plantation whereon I now live. Likewise one-third part of my stock of horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, household furniture and plantation utensils...Then I give and bequeath my daughter Ann Burnell, one Negro woman named Soll and her increase that she is already possessed of. Then I give and bequeath to my daughter Milly Dessarnett, one Negro woman called aLucy and her increases that she is already possessed of. Then I give and bequeath to my daughter Dyce Folks, one Negro woman called Jane, and her Increase that she is already possessed of. Then I give unto my grand-daughter, Dyce Hall, one Negro girl called Rose the same that she already possessed of. The before mentioned bequests to my daughters and grand daughter, aforesaid is only meant for the same slaves that I have formerly delivered each respectively. Then I give and devise unto my son Bowler Hall all the residue of my estate, both real and personal, as well that part left my wife after her decease as all other except what is heretofore mentioned given to my daughters and grandaughters,...I Constitute and appoint Richard (?Daniels), Thomas Bolling Chunford, John Houser and Bowler Hall executors of this my last will and testament, utterly revoking all former wills and testaments by me here-to-fore made and pronouncing and declaring this only to be my last will and testament, this Thirteenth Day of February One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Nine.
