FEEDBACK Dear FCFC,

In Robert Sungenis’ closing statement in the debate that FCFC had with CAI, he mentioned his dislike for me calling him a liar. I would like to comment and respond.

I do not like to engage in character assassination, so for me this is not personal, but debates should be open, honest, direct and objective in dealing with truth. If the shoe fits, you have to wear it! Robert Sungenis falls in one of the following categories and each person will have to make their own call on it, including Mr. Sungenis.

1. Robert Sungenis is sincerely mistaken in his understanding of Biblical truth and his interpretation of the Bible. With further and sincere investigation he could change.

2. He is compelled for whatever reason to defend a system (Catholicism) that has lied to the people for centuries. So he has then willingly joined with liars and doesn’t care for truth or the only thing he cares for is being right in a debate in the eyes of the people and/or collecting a pay check.

3. Robert Sungenis is correct and Christians are wrong for saying salvation is by grace through faith (Eph.2:8-9). Christians would be wrong concerning Purgatory, the Eucharist, the authority of the Bible, the priesthood, church government, views on Mary, prayer, the Mass, scapulars, the saints, tradition, the early church fathers and especially salvation and whether or not “works” is part of salvation. So to each reader, you need to go over the debate and note the section that inspired my statements. Look up Volume 2, May 1996, Issue 8 and turn to page

4. In the middle column at the end of the first paragraph Mr. Sungenis was reacting to Dr. Bill Jackson and made this statement: “Hopefully, after reading this, you will have enough theological integrity to cease from saying that Catholic theology teaches that we “work for salvation”. Is this an admittance to salvation by grace through faith? Mr. Sungenis sounds like he supports the Christian view that salvation is not attained by “works”! I don’t get it, either he is confused or he got caught in a lie or the Catholics finally agree with the Bible and have changed their view. If number three is the one that is correct, then I will believe the Pope is now Jewish too. It isn’t going to happen. I leave it up to you, the reader, as to what number or what category under which you believe Robert Sungenis falls.

Sal Varsalone Director of the Greater Canton Youthquake

According to #183, 1129, 1815 and 2002 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, salvation is attained by cooperating with grace through faith, good works, and participating in the sacraments. Sal Varsalone is correct.
