Susanna PARROT was born 19 February 1820 in Rockingham Co, Virginia to Philip PARROT and Barbara Ann SCHNEIDER. She was baptized as Engel Susanna in the Peaked Mt. Church in Rockingham Co, Virginia on 15 May 1820. The sponsor for this event was her grandmother Maria SCHNEIDER. Susanna grew up in Rockingham county and was married there to Jackson SMITH, marriage bond dated 12 June 1837. They remained here for nearly 20 years before moving with their families to Lenox Twp, Warren Co, Illinois.

A large party, consisting of William B. SMITH and most of his children and their families, including Jackson's, set off from Virginia and headed for Illinois in 1853. According to one account, they traveled overland by wagon to Wheeling, West Virginia, then by boat along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Oquawka, Henderson Co, Illinois and then cross country to Lenox Twp, Warren Co, Illinois. The family of Jackson and Susanna, at least, stopped in Ohio for a year where one of their daughters was born.

SMITH/LEWIS MYSTERY -

Jackson SMITH died 6 July 1859. On 2 January 1862 a Mrs. Susannah I. SMITH married a Jacob LEWIS. Before and after this marriage I find no mention of Jacob anywhere. In the 1870 and 1880 census records my Susanna is listed as Susanna SMITH and in the 1880 she has her oldest daughter, Barbara Ann PORTER, and her children living with her. She died 27 January 1884 and was interred in Lenox Union Cemetery, Warren Co, Illinois. According to a book which gives the inscriptions for this cemetery, her tombstone reads: Susannah E. SMITH, died January 26, 1884 age 63y 11m 25d, wife of Jackson SMITH. And yet her death certificate gives her name as Susannah LEWIS, age 63y 11m 12d, born in Virginia, resident of Illinois for 30 years. Also, in a Rockingham Co, Virginia deed book for 1877, a Susannah LEWIS of Lenox Twp, Warren Co, Illinois, appoints William J. MILLER (my Susanna's brother in-law) to collect money coming to her from the estate of Mathias SNYDER (my Susanna's uncle). Therefore I know Susannah SMITH and Susannah LEWIS to be one and the same.

Who was Jacob LEWIS, where did he come from and where did he go?
