I reccomend all of the above books to figure skating fans.
My Sergei and A Letter For Daria are must-haves for any fans of Katia and Gordeeva and Grinkov. In My Sergei, Katia is very candid in telling about her life with Sergei. The book will make you laugh at times and make you cry. It also gives an honest and sometimes disturbing account of the life and training of skating stars in the Soviet Union.
A Letter For Daria has wonderful pictures, mostly of Daria. It is a beautiful story about Katia's childhood memories, and Russian traditions. It also has funny and heartwarming stories and quotes from Daria.
Ekaterina Gordeeva: Overcoming Adversity is great for younger readers, but is pretty much just a summary of My Sergei. However, it does have some terrific pictures I have never seen anywhere else, and the last chapter has an interesting update on Katia's life since My Sergei.
Landing It: My Life On and Off the Ice is the second best biography of a skater I've ever read (My Sergei is first) The King of Skating is very honest about sharing the hard times of his life, such as the death of his mother and his own battle with cancer, along with the good. It gives a behind-the-scenes view of two eras of skating; a young skater training 35 years ago, when skating was a girls sport and figures were a big part of competition, and today when skating is extrememly popular. Scott also tells about starting the Stars On Ice tour, and gives a heart-rending account of Sergei's death, from the perspective of a close friend. I learned a lot about the sport, and how it's changed from reading this book, even how much it's changed in the last 10-15 years! Go buy it right now!! Stars On Ice is a beuatiful book with fascinating stories and info about the greates tour on earth. The pictures are fantastic. It will definately make you a SOI fan, if you aren't one already!
Inside Edge and Edge of Glory give an insider's view of the skater's world. They offer anecdotes and accounts found nowhere else. They are terrific reads for fans who want to know what really goes on behind the scenes of major competitions, what the judges and USFSA officials think and what influences their decisions, and all the wheeling and dealing that goes on between agents, skaters, and coaches. These books read like fiction!!
The Passion to Skate Is a beautiful book with gorgeous pictures. Sandra Bezic is one of the best, most respected choreographer in skating, and she has done a great job sharing her profession with us. It has fascinating behind-the-scenes info about the creating of programs, as well as how the Stars On Ice tour evolves each year, and the making of Carmen On Ice (Katarina Witt's feature-length ice show),Canvas On Ice (Brian Boitano's special), and Kurt Browning's specials Tall in the Saddle and You Must Remember This. A definate boost for any collection of skating books!
A Year in Figure Skating relates all of the major events and competitions in a season. It also tells about the skating world in Israel and China. The pictures are fabulous, and the writing is very knowledgeable. The best part of the book is the lovely chapter dedicated to Sergei.
Figure Skating: A Celebration begins with an excellent history of the sport, with pictures of old stars. It also discusses each discipline (men's, ladies', etc.) separately, and highlights today's stars of each disclipline. Again, the pictures are marvelous.
Figure Skating for Dummies gives fans the technical details of jumps, spins, choreaography, and everything involved with learning to skate. It helps explain the nuances of the judging system, and teaches fans how to distinguish between the jumps and use their own scoring system at home. It also tells the USFSA test requirements, and has Top Ten Lists.
Also Worth Mentioning:
Heart of A Champion
by Michelle Kwan
1997 Michell Kwan Corp.
1998 Edition includes update on Olympics
The most interesting part of this book is the story of Michelle's transformation from little jumping bean into a mature and artisitc skater, which choreaographer Lori Nichol accomplished with Michelle's 1996 long program, Salome. It also gives a good picture of the life of a young skater, but overall it is just an average book written by young prodigy. Still, I thought it better than those of Tara Lipinski, and sevral gymnasts's
The Winning Attitude
by Michelle Kwan
1999 Hyperion
Michelle talks about the attitudes and character traits that enables her to become a champion. She also reveals how these traits help us suceed in all areas of life.
Boitano's Edge
by Brian Boitano
1997 Simon & Schuster
Great pictures and first hand accounts of Brian's career, with a sprinkling of historical facts make this book unique from other skater's books. He gives a new perspective on the skating world, and tells about little things, such as life on tour. He also includes pictures of himself as a child, a diagram of his 1998 Olympic-Gold-Medal-winning artistic program, and handwritten notes from his coach, Linda Leaver. This is the only skating book I've come across that successfully blends history and facts with personal stories and experience.
The Official Book of Figure Skating
from the U.S. Figure Skating Association
writers include Ralph Routon, Thomas Dyja,
Dale Mitch, Carl Poe, Mary Alice Kellogg,
JoJo Starbuck, Suzanna Miller, and
an introduction by Peggy Fleming
1998 Simon & Schuster
This is an extremely informative book. It relates the history of the sport, and explains the technicalities of jumps and what elements are required in the programs of pairs, ice dance, and singles skaters. It even discusses precision skating. It also includes profiles of many of the sport's legends and "Great Moments" features, sharing many memorable skating moments. It is a fantastic resource, with records from the U.S. National Championships and the World Championships, and addresses for skating clubs across the nation.
