Alan Nakanishi, 59, was born and raised in Sacramento where he attended local schools, Sacramento High, and Sacramento City College. He spent his summers working — stacking cans at Del Monte Cannery, picking pears in Courtland, and, picking grapes in Lodi — not realizing that one day he would serve on Lodi’s City Council.
Working his way through college, Alan graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry from Pacific Union College, receiving his M.D. from Loma Linda University. In 1991 he received a Masters of Health Administration from the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia.
Following internship and residency at the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center, he served as a Major in the U.S. Army, heading a department at McDonald Army Hospital, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Since 1971, he has practiced in Stockton with a home in Lodi. Alan is President of Delta Eye Medical Group, a 6-physician group with offices in Lodi, Stockton, and Tracy. In 1977, he took a year sabbatical from practice for a fellowship at the Pacific Medical Center, in San Francisco.
His community service includes serving on the board of Lodi Academy (a private high school), performing surgeries in clinics in Baja California, and teaching residents at a hospital in Monterey, Mexico. He also serves on the board of his local church and is a member of the Lodi Rotary. In 1998 he was elected to the Lodi City Council.
He is board certified and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Alan is also a member of the American Medical Association, California Medical Association, and San Joaquin Medical Society.
Dr. Nakanishi and his wife Sue have two daughters: Pamela Tsuchiya, a physician, and Jennifer Cooper, a teacher. Their son, Jon Nakanishi, is an attorney. Alan and Sue also have four grandchildren.
