PLACING YOUR FILES ONTO THE INTERNET
The BAD news...
Actually writing HTML code to put on the 'net is often far less difficult than getting people to read it.
All operating systems should protect the files you create from the prying eyes of people on remote links from other computers.
To allow these people to view your HTML files you will need to disable this protection
      - this is the tricky part.
For those setting up on a company or university computer system you will need to modify the access privledges of the files in your account. This varies from Unix to Mac to PC, so consult a technician.
WARNING:
Try not to be too flamboyant when you first using these commands. Entering the command in the wrong user area or typing the wrong file name can open up files to the world that you would otherwise like to keep private.
If you are at home, however, the protocol of getting files onto the internet is even more complex and costly. So you will be more than glad to hear this :-
The GOOD news...
Geocites give away free web-sites to anyone who applies.
By applying you are given a section of their computer's memory to store your web site files upon. There are two big advantages in doing this : you do not use up your own computers memory and all of the files created are publicly accessible (so there is no need to fiddle with privledge commands).
The site you create must be non-commercial, free of adult material and under 2MB in size.
There is no charge what-so-ever, infact, being a member of geocities is quite rewarding, with a free e-mail address, competitions and newsletters thrown in to boot.
Geocities offer a wide range of tools for constructing and editing the files in your account, but, by far the easiest way to edit your site, is to keep a copy of your files at home (on floppy disc), edit them using your home computer (editing is faster that way) and then simply uploading the files straight into your geocity account.
There is no simpler and cheaper way of storing site, so why not join today?
With a site ready for construction, its time to begin building...
