From Rose Lee (Zaloudek) Hope Family History From Douglas J. Leonard: At one time he was an engraver. Have seen some of his engravings, were very detailed works of art, carved in metal. I have also seen a print made with one of these engravings, and its content was a work of art. It would have taken an extra ordinary artist to create a painting in like a negative, carve it into metal such that when used like a rubber stamp would produce such a detailed and artistic painting. *********** From 1870 U.S. Census for St. Louis, Missouri obtained by Ted Leonard. From Rose Lee (Zaloudek) Hope Family History Jan pronounced John. Was brought to US from Bohemia by a Catholic school in St. Louis as a teacher. According to Rose Lee (Zaloudek) Hope: "On May 15, 1868 John Zaloudek and Barbara Gross were married in St. John Nepomuk Church, St. Louis, MO. by Msgr Joseph Hessolum. (The church is still there). John spelled Jan in Czech) was 26, his father's name was William. Barbara was 32, her father's name Niklons. Most of the Bohemians came to St. Louis by sailing around the United States to New Orleans, LA, then sailed up the Mississippi to St. Louis. I don't know the year, but John Zaloudek arrived after the Civil War was over. Together they had one child, Charles John. Jan died (?) and Barbara remarried."
