JAVA APPLETS

Java Applets can make web pages come alive by adding excitement through interactivity. Besides adding to the appearance of web sites, Java Applets can also perform some useful functions such as adding "real-time" information. For example, people can watch "live" sports events on their computers or check up-to-the minute information on the stock market. Through Java Applets, people can chart stock information and change other financial information to suit their needs--for example, changing interest rates or adding other "what if" information. The added interactivity allowed by Java also increases the "fun" associated with games. Java Chat also allows the user to "chat" without downloading special software.

It is predicted by some that in the future each home will have a "dummy" computer which will connect to the Internet. Instead of buying software programs, the programs will be downloaded for each use. There will be no need to upgrade programs because the latest will be available "on demand." Programs will not have to be written for Mac, Windows 3.1, or Windows 95 because all platforms will be able to run the Java Applets. Because the programs will be stored on centralized servers, the applet will be delivered to the computer when needed.
