Carol Southard's Week 3 Homework Assignment

CHALLENGE 2:

Have members of your group locate at least one page which, in your group's opinion, uses graphics well and at least one page which uses them ineffectively. Describe why you feel this to be the case in each instance. Describe briefly how you believe the page designers could improve the page in the case of the ineffective use of graphics, post it to your demonstration page.

PAGES WITH BAD WEB PAGE GRAPHICS:

CAROL WRITES ----

I think this is the ugliest site I have ever been to before in my life. My eyes are still hurting and I think I need glasses now! This page is very, very bad. The backgrounds are horrible and the text on the page is unreadable. I believe the page designers could improve this page by starting all over from scratch. Maybe they should take this class to learn a few pointers!

PATTIE WRITES ----

EGADS!!! Carol, I think you found quite a winner of a bad page. Unbelieveably bad even. The background is atrocious. Did you click on any part of his face? The backgrounds to those pages are ghastly too!! LOL It was interesting though. I think you have your bad example page covered for the assignment. Good Job!

STEVE WRITES ----

Yes indeed that was an ugly site/sight. But it was ugly by design.

KAREN WRITES ----

I agree that that's a VERY bad graphics page. The only redeeming factor is the interesting imagemap he made of his face. "Hidden paths" - I did like that. It's just that the picture itself is pretty yucky, and there's no connection between the paths and the part of the face. I expected a conceptual link.

CAROL WRITES ---- This bage is indeed bad. It was also funny at the same time as you can tell that the designer wanted to make the page this bad in the first place. Guess since this is the purpose of this web page redesigning it would not help it any. I had a great laugh while I was there.

STEVE WRITES ---

I think my favorite ugly by design page could rival yours. Please check out the The Bud Uglly Web Page Design. Its sound is even out of tune. Word of caution...be sure to check all your settings upon leaving this site.

CAROL WRITES ---- This page clearly has an ineffective use of graphics in fact it is almost completely void of graphics. There is NO background color on the page. It is basic grey. They do however have a graphic title which is very ugly in my opinion. It is very colorful and hard to read the text. The one other graphic on the page is a page divider which in my opinion is also very ugly. I believe the page designers could improve this page by adding background color and at least one nice graphic and getting rid of the 2 graphics they currently have on this colorless page.

PAGES WITH GOOD WEB PAGE GRAPHICS:

William Horton consulting
http://www.csn.net/brochure/index.htm

KAREN WRITES ----

Here is a link for William Horton consulting. The reason that it is good graphically is that every graphic has meaning, and leads the user along the path directly to content which is reinforced by the graphics.

It is an excellent example of straightforward communication of ideas. This is a site that should come across to most users without much thinking.

Fine, it's not a stunning artsy-fartsy graphics show, but Horton is a major guru in the field of visual communications, and knows how to use graphics judiciously.

CAROL WRITES ---- The image map and the layout on this page is very nice. He also includes text links for those who cannot see image maps. His graphics other wise are small and well layed out. I think that this page has very good graphics and design.
