AUGUSTINE DAVENPORT
Notes
Augustine Davenport was born about 1740, probably in Halifax Co., Va. He was one of two sons born to William & Ann Davenport of Virginia.
Sometime about 1768, he married Mary Harris, the daughter of Jesse Harris. They had 3 children while living in Virginia, then moved to Rowan County, North Carolina.
In 1775, a year before the American Revolution, they had twin sons, Joel and Jesse Davenport.
The land in Guilford and Rowan Counties, east of the Yadkin River, was among the most choice land in the unsettled territories. The property that Augustine bought from Lord Granville and Henry Eustace McCullih was being sold to finance the Revolution.
Augustine settled the land, and after the Revolution, became a farmer. He & Mary had 8 more children, for a total of 13 over a period of about 25 years.
By 1793 he moved into Randolph Co. N.C. He wrote his will on Oct. 1, 1799 and died shortly afterward. He was about 59 years old.
In 1800 in a double ring ceremony, their son Jesse married Rebecca Fouts, and their daughter Sarah married William Fouts.
Mary was deeded 200 acres on the Randolph County line by her father, which she held until 181 1. She died soon afterwards in her 70's.
