Early Texas Settlers

Francis M. Gandy

Francis M. Gandy came to Texas in 1851 from Arkansas, born in Tennessee. He was one of six founding fathers in Meridian, Bosque County, Texas. His older brother John later followed him, and finally his father James D. Gandy brought all of his younger children to Meridian, Texas. For the story of this Gandy Family click Here

William Carey McCurry

William McCurry brought his family from Arkansas to Rusk Co. on December 28, 1841. He finally brought his family to Meridian, and is also listed as one of the six founding fathers. His daughter, Louisa Jane McCurry married Francis M. Gandy.

Allan Granberry Turner

Allan Turner brought his family from Mississippi to Texas. The exact year is not know yet, but it was before 1868 when his daughter Terrie Jane Turner was born in Turnersville. It is known that the town was named after her father.

George Washington Gardner

Came to Texas from Newton Co., Mississippi. He married Terrie Jane Turner in Meridian Texas in 1868.

Edward Francis

Married Rebecca Hardwick in Meridian, Texas in 1862.

Edwin Francis Davenport Sr.

Brought his family to Austin, Tx in the early 1900s. His family worked for four generations at the Austin American Statesman. Story of Family History written by E.F. Davenport Jr.

Samuel Barrow

Settled in Martindale, Texas before his daughter, Ida S. Barrow was born in 1856. He was born in Tenneesse in 1830. My grandfather told me that the Outlaw Clyde Barrow was a second cousin to his wife Lilliam Marie Moore. See the Barrow Family Association.

Hiram C. Moore

Settled in Martindale, Texas before his son, William Steven Moore was born in 1848. Hiram was the son of Robert C. Moore and was born in Indiana in 1819.

Sarah Ratliff

Sarah also called Sally, came to Martindale prior to 1848 when her son William Steven Moore was born. She is the daughter of James Ratliff of Virginia and Sarah of North Carolina. Sarah was born in 1824 in Illinois. She Married Hiram C. Moore.
