Thomas HARWOOD

The immigrant ancestor, Thomas HARWOOD was born ca. 1600 in Thurlby, Lincolnshire, England.

Thomas HARWOOD was the son of George HARWOOD (ca. 1592 -aft. 1661), a Merchant of London, who was from Lincoln County, England, and also came to the Peninsula of Virginia, where he died. Thomas HARWOOD's mother was CATHERINE PHESANT (ca. 1593 -?). She was the daughter of Thomas PHESANT, and was born in Dublin, Ireland.

Thomas HARWOOD landed at Jamestown, Virginia, shortly after the 1622 Indian Massacre, joining his uncle, Sir Edward Harwood (1586-bef. 9/11/1632), a Virginia Company stockholder, and his brother William, Captain-Governor of the Martin's Hundred settlement. Thomas, who obviously moved in the colony's circle of influential persons, initially settled near Jamestown where his wife, Grace, joined him, but they moved to Mulberry Island in 1624, tenanting the house of Captain William Pierce.

In 1626 Thomas Harwood received a patent of 100 acres between two creeks at Blunt Point, near Deep Creek's entrance into the Warwick River, called Harwood's Neck. This land proved to be uncultivable and he moved back to Mulberry Island. During this time he helped lead militia raids against the Indians, which earned him the rank of captain. Thomas Harwood, who appears to have been rather familiar with the law and skilled at oratory, became very active in the colony's government. He served as a Burgess for over 20 years and was elected Speaker of the House of Burgesses in 1629. Harwood’s success led him to become one of the participants in the Kiskiake (Cheesecake) Settlement. At this time he began acquiring land along Skiffe's Creek.

In 1632 Thomas Harwood is listed as owner of 240 acres on Skiffe's Creek. The enterprising Thomas Harwood, busily acquiring property on Mulberry Island and along nearby streams, possibly had added the Endview lands to his holdings by 1635 when he owned about 1,500 acres at the head of nearby Skiffe's Creek.

Harwood's participation in the deposition of Governor Sir John Harvey in 1635 took him to London where he was temporarily jailed; he was quickly released and returned to Virginia to wide acclaim.

Harwood continued to expand his land holdings throughout the decade, naming his plantation Queen’s Hith, an Old English term for a river landing, or small haven. It was a perfect location, sited on a navigable creek leading directly to the James River and adjacent to the main road leading north to Jamestown. When the Assembly established county boundaries in 1642, the northern border of the newly established Warwick River Shire included "all the divident of Mr. Thomas Harwood," thus placing the family properties in the vicinity of present-day Endview.

Harwood continued to serve the colony in several posts, including tobacco viewer and councilor, until his death in 1652.
