Wish you luck with your dream, we are working on ours. We small farm with our horses, about 11 acres: hay, oats and corm and large garden. We have been logging with our horses and the help of some friends in the SC Draft Horse Assoc., to clear some back oods to make way for pasture. I think this will be a 4 year job. Next logging day is Feb of 2000. We enjoy the field work but it's hard work, we DO NOT own a tractor. We have a Brabant Stallion " Milkwood Farms Bruno Van Rocke" out of Eros Vant Barenk nshof (import) and plan on offering him for service this year. We also hope to raise a few Brabants. We also had 2 Fox Valley Shires (mares), sold them out to Oklahoma, they were sharp but not good field horses. Come over for the OLD TIME HORSE FARMERS GATHERING, Sept. 24 & 25, '99. Had 56 draft horses and mules, lots in the field, demonstrating field work. I've gone on and on. Good Luck!

Sounds like you have things well in hand. We hope to move to TN in a little over 2 yr. I hope we don't have quite the mess that you have. Of course our's will be bought, not inherited. (Our present house in NJ was inherited. Thank goodness we didn't hav to burn privet too.) We hope to do some mixed-power farming (horses and old tractor), have some choose and cut Christmas trees, cut flowers, herbs, pumpkins, maybe do hayrides, maybe raise a couple steers. Edd even brought up the subject of sheep event ally, for wool production. I let him think it was his idea. We volunteer at a living history farm in NJ, so are learning some of the horse-related stuff we'll need to know. We also want to start our own sign business making small signs, lettering vehicl s, etc. Well, enough rambling. Hope all your plans work out. (Our cats are Kayo, an 11 yr old calico and Buddy, a 4 yr. old orange tabby; the dogs are Freckles, a 14 yr. old springer-beagle? mutt, Abby, a 2 yr. old black Lab and Roxy, a 2 yr. old chihuahua-terrier mutt.)

Saw your post about tractor advice. I like old American tractors. I farm with International Farmall C & M, Ford 8N, and John Deere 40. I have always been able to get parts and keep them running. They do all I ask them to. If you are somewhat mechanic l in nature they would probably work for you. When you start selling Shire colts about what will you ask for one? Good Luck Gary Schmidt

I've always been interested in draft horses, since seeing the Draft Horse Classic held in the Grass Valley, California Fairgrounds. This is an annual event (around October). A number of people in our area are using draft horses to clear timber from indi idual properties. The gentle giants can move in and out of a person's property, clear logs, without road construction and heavy equipment damage. My interest as an artist has always been horses and animals of all shapes and sizes.
