        The Tongue

Each one should judge his own conduct.
For everyone has to carry his own load

        Galatians:4,6

        Three Women Gossiping

Often we sit around talking shop, but more often our talk is
not of ourselves, especially of our own faults, but rather those
of others. We love to feel better about ourselves by spreading
destructive news about a neighbour or even a stranger. Worse
still, it's usually not first hand news but something we
heard about so-and-so, from someone else!

And even if someone confided in us, we have no right to
        divulge any information.

I stand by this yesteday, today and tomorrow:
If I want to say something that is not praiseworthy of
so-and-so, I must do it in the presence of that
so-and-so, or I am nothing but a useless coward,
with no right to call myself a Christian!

Gossip Breaks Hearts And Ruins Lives

        Remember Me?

My name is Gossip. I have no respect for justice.

I maim without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I
am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age.
The more I am quoted the more I am believed.
I flourish at every level of society.

My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves
against me because I have no name and no face. To track
me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more
        elusive I become.

I am nobody's friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it
        is never quite the same.

I topple governments and wreck marriages.

I ruin careers, cause sleepless nights, heartache
        and indigestion.

I spawn suspicion and generate grief.

I make innocent people cry in their pillows.

Even my name hisses, I am called Gossip. Shop gossip,
Party gossip. I make headlines and headaches.

Before you repeat a story ask yourself:
        Is it true?
        Is it fair?
        Is it NECESSARY?

If not then PLEASE keep it to yourself!

My brothers, not many of you should become teachers. As you
know the teachers will be judged with greater strictness than
others. All of us often make mistakes, but if a person never
makes a mistake in what he says, he is perfect and also able
        to control his whole being.

The tongue, small as it is, can boast of great things.

Just think how a large forest can be set on fire by a tiny
flame! And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong,
occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through
our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our
existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself.
Man is able to tame and has tamed all other creatures,
wild animals and birds, reptiles and fish. But no one
has been able to tame the tongue. It is evil and
        uncontrollable, full of deadly poison.

We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to
curse our fellowman, who is created in the likeness of God.

No spring of water pours out sweet water and bitter water
        from the same opening.
