Worse still, it's usually not first hand news but something we heard about so-and-so, from someone else! And even if someone confided in us, we have no right to divulge any information. I stand by this yesteday, today and tomorrow: If I want to say something that is not praiseworthy of so-and-so, I must do it in the presence of that so-and-so, or I am nothing but a useless coward, with no right to call myself a Christian! I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted the more I am believed. I flourish at every level of society. My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name and no face. To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody's friend. Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never quite the same. I topple governments and wreck marriages. I ruin careers, cause sleepless nights, heartache and indigestion. I spawn suspicion and generate grief. I make innocent people cry in their pillows. Even my name hisses, I am called Gossip. Shop gossip, Party gossip. I make headlines and headaches. But no one has been able to tame the tongue. It is evil and uncontrollable, full of deadly poison. We use it to give thanks to our Lord and Father and also to curse our fellowman, who is created in the likeness of God.
