A very special man, at the age of 80, went home to the Lord. He left us peacefully on the 23rd of September 1999. Here are some words that I spoke of him during his funeral mass, on the 27th, followed by some words and a poem from Gerry. Firstly I'd like to say that Lina Chia, his wife of 47 years, professes her undying love for her dearly departed husband, whom she will miss so very much. Y'know..they had just celebrated their Wedding Anniversary on September the 3rd. My Godmother Lina says that she will always remember him and pray for him every night. From this testimony of my Godma, we can realize the bond that kept them together through thick and thin. Both of them honored their love and marital vows till the very end. He was an honorable man. My Uncle Adrian was a very easygoing person too. He always had a warm smile and a word to cheer me up. From the time I was young and till the time he left us to be with Jesus, I cannot ever recall even one harsh word that left his lips. He was not the sort of "old Uncle" who was always giving out advice about things, even when he knew the details of the problem. Instead, he approached with his own special and unique way that made me comfortable to confide in him. He never ever judged but always lent a patient ear and explored solutions together with me and encouraged me, instead of reprimanding. And he had an optimistic outlook, which could make anyone feel a lot better when facing difficult situations. He found joy in making people laugh with his silly jokes and his clown faces. His presence was always felt through his booming voice and animated gestures that lit the room with love and comfort. One of the best nicknames that I remember Uncle Adrian by was "The Handyman" and "The Man Handy". The wonderful thing about my Uncle Adrian is that he seemed to really enjoy taking on all kinds of chores that others would find trivial or boring. I remember he used to make quite a joyous occasion out of helping my mom paint the house or mow the lawn. I guess he really embraced simple works and perhaps he saw that it brought glory to Christ, for after all, Jesus was a simple carpenter. No job was too small for Uncle Adrian and in his Christian ways, he helped whenever and wherever possible. He could do just about anything around the house, from cooking or baking to plumbing or moving house. I'm very fortunate to have known as well as have been related to such a sweet and compassionate soul, who always put others before himself. I've seen him welcome strangers, as if they were his old friends. Anyone could get comfortable around him in a matter of a few minutes. His beauty was always shining through his twinkling eyes, his ready smile, the considerate and kind words he uttered and his infectious laughter. He never took anyone for granted. He treated young and old alike, with the greatest of respect. It pains me that I shall not see his face here again, but it comforts me to know that he is now in the Arms of our Lord. I thank God for Uncle Adrian's life here on earth and the impact he has had on me. When I remember him, I shall always remember his grinning face and the ringing of his laughter. His journey was long, and through it all, he embraced life with love first! "And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely". Revelations 21:6 "...whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life". John 4:14 Gerry read: I have not known Uncle Adrian for a long time but through this short span of about 8 years, he has befriended me and welcomed me to the family with open arms. I found him to be a warm, considerate and jovial person who was eager to get to know me. It was a comfortable first meeting that grew to a family bond between us. He was an Uncle…my Uncle Adrian too. Christmas is around the corner and perhaps Uncle Adrian has this wish for all of us: I will see the countless Christmas trees around the world below With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars, reflecting and all aglow. The sight will be spectacular! Please, wipe away your tear For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I'll hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear But the sounds of music won't compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart But I am not so far away, We really are not apart. So be happy for me, my dear ones, You know I hold you dear. And be glad I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I sent you each a special gift, from our heavenly home above. I sent you each a memory of my undying love. After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold. It was always most important in the stories that Jesus told. Please love and keep each other as our Father said to do, For I cannot count the blessings that our Father has for you. When December comes have a Merry Christmas, Now wipe away that tear, Remember I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. author- Ben Kenny's loving contribution to this page. This is about our uncle whom we affectionately called Chuck Berry. It was always French-loaf when Uncle Adrian came visiting, whether it was just a coincidence or part of a food plan, this simple style of bread "cholek" (dunking into) with coffee was always the selection for us to enjoy an afternoon tea with the Uncle whom we came to love dearly. I remember his indomitable spirit to finish painting a room, the no-problem look as he said he could still makan (eat) and chew food even though he had no "grinders" (molars), the enjoyment and fun he injected into burning cut-grass in the backyard, his detailed attention in varnishing an old desk that made it look like a million bucks... but most of all his laughter, it was unmistakably Uncle Adrian. I remember, as a little boy, hearing that he would walk such distances to work that made him kind of a superman in my mind. Actually he was a superman; his strength, energy and determination more than qualified him. Uncle Adrian, we will all miss you on earth but we know some things will live on forever, like the love you had for all your loved ones and our love for you. Your spirit is now with Jesus in heaven and the memories of all the super times you gave us will be locked in our hearts. We won't say good-bye because you still live in us and we will see you when someday we too are called home. With lots of Love, Kenny, Siok Hwee and baby Alex.
