Bible Words for Praise & Worship

  • Amen - Literally, "Surely". Eph 3:21
  • Barak – To kneel, to bless God as an act of adoration – Psalm 72:15b, "…and daily shall He be praised (baraked)."
  • Hagah - Meditate aloud, as in Psalm 1:2, "But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate (hagah) day and night".
  • HalalMost common word for praise - to make a show, to boast; to be clamorously foolish, to talk on and on foolishly about the Lord. Psalm 102: 18, "This shall be written for the generation to come: and people who shall be created shall praise the Lord."
  • Halleluja Alleluia - Literally, "Praise the Lord"! Rev 19:1 And after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:
  • Hosanna - Literally, "Save us"! Mt 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
  • Maranatha - Literally "Our Lord Come". 1Co
  • Selah - Pause, reflect or meditate. Hab 3, Ps 140, Ps 143, Ps 85, many more Psalms.
  • Shabach – To address in a loud tone; glory, praise, triumph (to shout). Psalm 63:3, "Because your loving kindness is better than life I shall praise (shabach) thee."
  • Tehilla – To sing our "halals". Psalm 147:1, "Praise (halal) the Lord. How good it is to sing praises (tehilla) to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise (tehilla) Him."
  • Towdah – Derived from yadah – An extension of the hands, usually in adoration, specifically, a choir or worshippers. Psalm 50:53, "Whoso offereth praise (towdah) glorifieth me; and to him that ordereth his conversation aright shall I show the salvation of God."
  • Yadah – To revere or worship the Lord with extended open hands; to throw out the open hand (forcefully and victoriously). Psalm 67:3, "Let the people praise (yadah) thee. O God let all the people praise (yadah) thee."
  • Zamar – To touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument; also to be accompanied by the voice; to celebrate with song and music. Psalm 52:7&8, "My heart is fixed. O God, my heart is fixed I will sing and give you praise. Awake up, my glory; awake. Psaltry and harp (zamar): I myself will awake early."
