Description

On July 1, 1975, all populations of the Bactrian Camel were listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wind Fauna and Flora (CITES), indicating the wild population of this animal was in danger of extinction.

The Bactrian Camel was removed from Appendix I four and a half years later, on June 28, 1979.

While the species does not presently enjoy protection under CITES, it is classified in the 1997 IUCN Red List as endangered.
