Turning Fleeces into Yarn

Before alpaca and llama fiber can be used, it must be spun into yarn. The fiber comes off the animals as fleeces weighing five to six pounds.

First, the fleeces are washed, dried and opened.

Then the fleece is carded. In carding, the fleece is combed, which lines the fibers up with each other and smooths them out.

Continuous strands of fiber, called rovings, may then be passed through a machine called a servo to give them a consistent strength.

The fiber is then combed again, and gently twisted, pulled, and stretched.

The roving is then spun into a worsted yarn to specific draft requirements.
