The Three Kings' Camels
Matthew 2:1 (KJV) In many parts of the world, a Christmas pageant, complete with three wise men from the east, is an important part of the annual Christmas celebrations. At Shepherd in the Hills, a sprawling theater/restaurant/gift shop complex located just outside Branson, Missouri, they went the extra mile, with three of Rod Malchow's camels playing a role in their annual production of The Newborn King. In her article, Rod Malchow's Camels, Pamela Selbert reports that three stately camels--two ridden and one led--cross a huge stage in the outdoor ampitheater that is spread with sand to resemble the Palestinian landscape. These camels play the role of escorts to the three wise men, and are a real hit with the audience of several thousand people. Ed Marshall, the bearded daytime Director of Entertainment at Shepherd in the Hills, describes hiring the camels as "the best thing they could have done, because people really love them." The show, which has run every year since 1987, tells the story of the Bith of Christ in vignettes. |
