Other Information
From an article in the Express(3rd issue I believe) done by Carla Pierce - After he won the Hambo., Bonefish was scheduled for a race at Hazel Park in Detroit but he bled going to the gate (a respiratory problem) so he never made another start. Unfortunately this one incident of bleeding dogged him throughout his days at stud. Superstitious trainers believe his colts would inherit the problem but the success of his fillies speaks for itself. He sired many great fillies!
His original stud fee was $3,500 and I believe he stood at Castleton Farm in Kentucky. His original four breeding seasons were relatively low for a popular racehorse (his first crop numbered only 56, second crop had 62). With the success of his frist crop to the races he rose in popularity. He served 177 mares in 1980 and 156 the following year. In the mid-80's, his popularity as a sire began to fall due to trainers still condemning all Bonefish colts as inferior to his fillies and claiming that his colts were bleeders. he was recognized as a sire of quality but was not mentioned in the same breth with Speedy Crown or Super Bowl. Also, his inability to sire even one Hambiltonian winner turned off some prospective owners(that race really is that important to people who own trotters!). All of this resulted in his being sold to Swedish interests and he was thus exported in 1987 to Sweden. Being a son of Nevele Pride, who is the sire to end all sires to the Swedes, he was an instant hit servicing 120 mares during his first season there. He stood as the highest priced stallion at 60,000 Swedish Crowns (roughly $10,000 US dollars). The Swedes obviously took it very hard when Bonefish died in 1988(he was found dead in his paddock).
As a sire, although losing popularity, he still was very successful. Years after his death, he still appears on the all time leading sires of 2:00 trotters list with 105 foals. He sire 3 1:55 trotters. His 2:00 credits as a broodmare sire seems to be growing everyday, his fillies were especially strong on the racetrack and are proving so in the breeding shed. There were 43 total 2yo 2:00 trotters in 1993 and Bonefish is the broodmare sire of six of them including Bosphorous 2,1:57 and Lady Sport 2,1:59.1. Also, top performer Winky's Goal is a grand-daughter of Bonefish. Winky's Goal won(as a 3yo) 10 of 19 starts, trotted in 1:54.4 and won $519,030. Bonefish has also been the broodmare sire of Supergill 3,1:53.3 $664,194, Traffic Jam S 3,1:56.2, $457,724, Wholly arnie 3,1:57.4 $351,456, Mamamia 4,TT1:56.3, Newstime Star 3,1:57.3, etc...
