Other Information
From Western Horseman, March 1990 - "King P-234 is one of the great sires of arena horses, having sired twenty AQHA Champions, and he is one of the great sires of sires, having been the maternal grandsire of fifty AQHa Champions. He fathered 611 registered foals in his lieftime, and descendants of King can be found virtually every where in the Quarter Horse world, both in North America and abroad. Even today, many respected breeders of reining and cutting horses value King bloodlines.
This horse was foaled in 1932 near Laredo, Tex., thanks to the breeding program of Benevides Volpe. King's sire was Zantanon and his dam, Jabalina. the bay colt had some speed and became a good roping horse. Winn DuBois of Uvalde bought him for that purpose, and King performed well.
In 1937, Jess Hankins talked DuBois out of King, with the help of the then considerable sum of $800. Hankins took the stud to his ranch near Rocksprings, Tex., and the 14.2 stallion slowly began to make a name for himself as a sire.
Though Hankins kept the stud fee up, there was a continuous stream of mares arriving from all over the country.
In 1941, Hankins put King on the Texas show trail in cutting, reining, and halter. King won his share that year and was then retired to ranch work and his stallion duties, never to be campaigned again. Hankins, who became an AQHA director in 1951 and AQHA president in 1964, owned the horse until he died, in 1958.
King's most famous son was Poco Bueno, who earned a glowing reputation as an exceptional cow horse, especially in cutting and roping, and as a quality sire in his own right. Other notable King offspring are Hank H, Beaver Creek, Royal King, Tabano King, King Glo, and King's Pistol."
