Praying in Groups

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Strength in Numbers

Our ability to make an impact on this world multiplies rapidly when we are in union with other believers. In the Song of Moses we learn that with the Lord's help one person can chase a thousand of the enemy and two can put ten thousand to fight. For this reason it is good to join with others for prayer.

Of course God is not limited by the size of his army. As a child, David slew Goliath. His friend Jonathan caused terror to fall on a whole army. It is possible to get the impression that the Church is not necessary for doing the work of God.

God desires for his people to work together to do his work on earth. He designed us with strengths and weaknesses so we would rely on teamwork to get things done. David and Jonathan, sometimes mistakenly viewed as rugged individualists, were only successful because they inspired God's people to victory. Had others not gotten involved in the fight, these events would have been nothing but strange footnotes in Israel's history.

Prayer in Church Services

As part of their regular services, most churches devote time for the assembly to offer general intercessions. These intercessions may include; 1)for the needs of the church, 2)for public authorities and the salvation of the world 3)for those oppressed by any need and 4)for the local community.
If your local church does not have a time in it's service for intercessory prayer, please ask your pastor to include it.
Belonging to a Church
It is assumed most people who pray are members of a church. In our local church we find; 1)Fellowship, a faimly atmoshere were people love and support each other 2)Discipleship, teaching and guiding in the way of Christian life and 3)Opportunity to minister, giving our talents to the work of Christ.

Prayer Groups and Events

We can meet with others for the purpose of prayer. This can be a small gathering of two friends or a large one with thousands of participants.

Many churchs have prayer meetings. This is a good time for the members of the church to pray for each other and for their ministry.

Interchurch prayer meetings and events allow the body of Christ to come together. These meetings tend to adress broader concerns.

Prayer calenders
Prayer calenders allow people to pray in unison without being physically together. The same request can be asked at the same time from people around the world. "Oreration World" by Patrick Johnstone (Zondervan) gives a daily assignment of a nation or people group to pray for. The "Ecumenical Prayer Cycle" is structured by weeks.

Durring a time of crisis a request for prayer can be sent out. This normaly comes from a recognized leader and is reported in the mass media. President Clinton asking Americans to pray after the Oklahoma City bombing would be an example.
