Worship’s Civil War

Carol and I participate in "more worship situations" than almost any of you! And we are more convinced than ever that our churches must upgrade the quality of worship!

Here are seven observations:

  1. Too often worship leaders are ill prepared, stumbling around with many music pages.
  2. Often there seems to be little logic or planning on the directions or theme of the worships.
  3. "Special music" is anything but! It is better not to have any than to have "specials" that detract.
  4. It is often obvious that the worship teams practice very little… even pick up last minute extras.
  5. Many churches seem to think it is sinful to have a sharp person on the soundboard… who understands balance and does not turn up the microphone about three notes late.
  6. It should be unacceptable to use overhead projector without (1) filling the screen and (2) blocking off "keystone edges."
  7. I continue to observe the uselessness of giving those dreadful announcements… and worse yet when someone stands up in the congregation and mumbles.

NOTE: I do not necessarily agree with all of the points listed here totally. I think that in an overall way they are good. Number four should not be misinterpreted as saying that I do not think that the leading of the Holy Spirit is not important. If you have any concerns or questions, please email me.
