NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. — 1/10/00 despite dressing just eight players,
the Manchester girls' basketball team pounded North Miami 78-33 in a
Three Rivers Conference game here Monday.
With the win, Manchester remains unbeaten and atop of the conference
                 standings with a 3-0 record.
The host Lady Squires were missing a number of players due to illness and
injury and used a core of six girls until the fourth quarter.
"I thought we did a good job," Manchester coach Keri Nichols said. "We
knew that this was a big game, it's the first of three this week and it's finals
week, so we thought we needed to concentrate and start the week off with a
                 win."
Manchester's fullcourt press, like it has for many opponents this season,
took North Miami out of its game in the first quarter.
The Lady Warriors were forced into 12 first-quarter turnovers and had as
many turnovers as points by halftime with 19.
"Anytime you have something that can cause turnovers, you have to be
happy with it," Nichols said of the press. "We were pretty successful with it,
but Northfield broke it pretty easily, so were just working on making it
                 better."
The Lady Squires took control early with a 10-0 run to open the game and
finished the quarter with an 18-6 advantage, not allowing North Miami to
score until the three-minute mark of the period.
Forward Jessica Hicks scored nine points during the first quarter run, Carrie
White scored five and Heather Terflinger capped the surge with a layup.
The run continued in the second quarter, as Manchester began the period
with a 12-2 run that was halted with an Alissa See jump shot with 2:42 left in
                 the half.
"It's always hard to please a coach, we're paid to be critical," Nichols said
with a laugh. "I thought we did a nice job of adjusting to what they were
doing and I think we are definitely taking a step forward."
Manchester did their best to dominate the Lady Warriors (3-11, 1-3),
outrebounding North Miami 36-27 and holding a comfortable advantage at
the free-throw line. The Lady Squires were 24-of-37 from the charity stripe
while North Miami hit just 3-of-12.
The combination of Hicks and Terflinger was a potent one for Manchester
and posed problems for North Miami.
Terflinger would push the ball up the court and either drive the lane for a
layup or pass the ball off to Hicks inside.
Hicks led all scorers with 30 points on 12 of 18 shooting and completed the
double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. She also had four steals.
Terflinger finished with 16 points and grabbed five boards while dishing out
10 assists, Ann Harms connected was 3-for-4 from the floor for 10 points,
while Carrie White added eight. Erin White came off the bench to grab eight
                 rebounds.
For North Miami, See was the leading scorer with 13 points and grabbed
five rebounds. Christena Crippen added seven points and four rebounds
while Brooke Haynes added five and grabbed a team-high seven boards.
Manchester moves to 10-3 overall and travels to Triton on Thursday.
