A letter written by John Albert Livers to his son
John L. Livers at Charlottesville, Virginia
Grottoes March 24, 1927
Dear John,
Glad to get your letter with a letter from Dr. Livers. He is a grandson of old Dave Livers who was a first cousin of my father and a strict Protestant. He was a school teacher. My sister Emma use to call him a Dandy. He, I think, the son, is an improvement of the father, as he writes a fine letter and I will write him. He is right about all of the name of "Livers", in this country, came from the old Arnold Livers that left England after the Battle of the Boyne. He was a General under King James the 2nd who was fighting his son-in-law William of Orange to retake the throne and would have succeeded had he not begged his soldiers to spare his subjects when the Battle changed and James and his Officers were compelled to flee from Ireland and Lord Arnold Livers located near Emmitsburg, Maryland. Three of his sons went to Kentucky with Daniel Boone when he made his last trip to that state. They started a little colony in the Wilderness and called it Bardstown, near Louisville. They helped to build a Cathedral in that town and as they hued the timbers to his day can be seen Robert, Henry and Arnold Livers. Daniel Boone's monument stands not far from Bardstown. I am fully determined to write up what little I know of our family tree, and, If you ever get to Roanoke Island, North Carolina, I hope you will find time to see what was done with the 600 acres that my mother and four brothers inherited which was a grant given to her aunt by Sir Walter Raleigh, and her brother Levi O'Brien went down to sell the property in 1836 and was never heard from since and it was thought he was killed by the Indians. Mother joins in love and best wishes to all.
Your Father,
John A. Livers
