He first appears in the Mobile city directory in 1869, in which he is listed as
"clerk, steamboat Mary Swan," residing at the northwest corner of Shell Road
and Ann Street [his mother's address]. In the 1870 directory he is listed as
"clerk D. J. Files & Co." with same residence as in 1869. In the 1871-72
directories he is shown simply as "clerk" at the same address. (3)

Houston city directories for several years from 1879 show him as Chief Clerk of
the auditor's department of the Texas & New Orleans Railroad, of which his
mother's first cousin Josiah Frazer Crosby served at one time as President. (1)
