The end of an era.

On the 29th January, 1996 a champion quietly took his leave from this world, given relief from the pain of cancer.
It is very difficult to know where to start this tribute as much has been said and written about

Ch. Hushanda Lyndon Johnson and no doubt more tributes will follow.
"LB" was a dog born with a rare charisma which sets a great champion apart from others. He achieved much in his short lifespan - 31 Best in Show at all Breeds and Specialty Championship Shows, over 80 Best Exhibit in the Hound Group, well in excess of 3000 Championship points, winner of the KCC Guineas final in strong company as a puppy and then going on to win Puppy in Group at the 1989 Royal Melbourne Show.
He was the inaugural winner of the Hound Club of Victoria's Top Hound competition in 1995 under three hound specialists, one of whom also being a breed specialist.
"LB" was best in show at three of our Championship Shows, runner-up at two as well as winning interstate specialties.
His crowning achievement was, to my mind, winning Best Exhibit in Show at the Second Basset Hound national Show under breed specialist Frances Meredith of the UK from an entry of 130 Basset Hounds from all over Australia.
"LB's" many virtues were recognised and rewarded by breed specialists, hound specialists and all breed judges not only from Australia but from around the world.
Since the re-introduction of the Basset Hound into this state in the 1950's we have been fortunate to have had many Champions who proudly held their own against other breeds and who were the foundation and strength of our dogs today. "LB" followed in these footsteps and quite simply, strode on re-writing the record book for the breed on his way. His record will be long standing and only time will tell if there is to be another to follow in his footsteps.
"LB" and his owner/handler/breeder Grace Venuto, were a unique and impressive team in the show ring. With his happy and outgoing demeanour he was a great ambassador for our breed.
Sadly, we were not able to farewell this grand gentleman as he deserved but his memory will not be erased for a long time. He will live long in the memory of many and his name carried on into the future by his progeny.

And then there are the Bassets that have made a name for themselves in Advertising and Promoting the Breed, being pushed and pulled and cuddled by a variety of humans. Made to sit still for hours on end while the Photographers get just the right shot for the ad....(probably mum's been dangling a treat just out of shot for hours too) and generally being an Ambassador for the Breed.

The first one that springs to mind is Aust. Ch. Basjambe Xmas Knight "Arthur".
