{Drawing and applique} For many years now I have been unhappy with my applique looking like a piece of toast on a plate... in other words ....FLAT Whilst in the Smithsonian Museum in 1997 I viewed a quilt that changed my way of thinking. The applique panels were illustrated. So I experimented with illustration using pigma brushes. Quilting history is so rich and fascinates me... and although I like modern techniques I enjoy the challenge of reviving old methods which have slipped into retirement. Palompan is the name of Quilt Illustration and was used widely in the 15th and 16th century. Now we are using it in 2001 and I call it "Drapplique" It is so simple you wonder why it hasn't been done before. I have featured it heavily in my last 4 exhibition quilts. The motto of my class in Drapplique is "Drapplique" an application of artistic actions for everyone!!! |
