Edwin I. Kursheedt joined the Washington Artillery while, in civilian life, he was a West Indies merchant.  He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on in October 1861.  Kursheedt was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg in 1862.  In April 1863, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major, and in 1864 was promoted to Adjutant with the rank of Lieutenant.
