Old State House Frieze - Capitol's West Wall
Depicting the Washington Artillery
During the War Between the States
A sword-wielding female figure representing the State of
Louisiana at war is accompanied by an Eastern Brown pelican, the Louisiana State bird, as
Louisiana troops charge into battle. The infantry troops on the left represent
soldiers under the command of Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. The Washington
Artillery of New Orleans, bearing both the Confederate flag and the Louisiana flag, are
represented on the right side of the frieze. In the background are chains stretched
across the Mississippi River to prevent or hinder Federal navigation of the Mississippi.
