According to the pedigree produced by The Royal College of Arms., Samuel Shepherd Folker was born on 30 September 1789. He appears to have been their only child.
Nothing of his life up to the time of his marriage is known at present.
Samuel married Susannah Thorp at Oxford on 13 January 1821. The record of their marriage shows that he was a resident of Brighthelmstone, the former name for Brighton.
Their first child, Samuel William Thorp Folker was born on 1 December 1821. The registration of his baptism shows the family as living in North Street, Brighton.
The first three children of Samuel and Sarah each died in infancy. Samuel William died at the age of fifteen months on 7 March 1823. His sister born on 6 April 1823 died on 12 June 1823 and his brother John Ambrose born 21 June 1825 died five months later on 18 November 1825.
References in the Brighton Directories of 1822 show Samuel Shepherd Folker as a carver and gilder of the Royal Colonnade at 136 North Street, Brighton. One reference notes him as 'carver and gilder to his majesty' therefore it is likely that he provided a service to the royal pavilion at Brighton which was opposite his shop.
There is a photograph in Brighton Library of the Colonnade taken round about the 1880's. The numbering of the shops does not match the numbers in the Directories, therefore it is likely that the premises were renumbered during the intervening period.
Son William Henry was born on 30 August 1826 and daughter Maria on 13 September 1828. Both were baptised in Brighton. Maria died at the age of 4.
In 1929, Samuel published four prints of engravings from a set of six entitled 'Beauties of Brighton'. This is detailed a few pages further on.
Son Alfred Hanley was born on 28 February 1830 and daughter Emma on 5 January 1833.
There is a references to Samuel as having his business at 3 Bridge Street Westminster in 1835 and it is likely that the family moved to Oxford soon after that time.
From that point, nothing of Samuel's life is known up to the time of his death which took place in Oxford on 5 April 1837 when he was aged 47. He was buried at Summertown, Oxford.
In the possession of the family are several copies of a print published by Samuel in Brighton in 1829. The print bears his name and is copyright. One of these prints was sent to a specialist in 1970 for his opinion. He suggested that it did not have much value by itself as it was one of a set, however the entire set would have some value. The extent of this value is not known
A book called 'Images of Brighton' catalogues prints appertaining to Brighton. It would appear from the details that Samuel was involved in the production of the latter four of the set of six prints. In 1993, one of the prints was shown to the proprietor of a shop in Brighton which specialised in such items. She was able to find reference to S.S.Folker in a book called 'Images of Brighton'.
From the details in that book, the print is the sixth in a set of six entitled Beauties of Brighton. According to the proprietor of the shop in Brighton, Samuel Folker was not known as a publisher and it is likely that he undertook this as an entrepreneur which was not uncommon in those days. She further suggested that the Print Room at the British Museum may be able to provide more information.
She also stated that this was not an original print, but a copy. One assumes that Samuel produced both original and reprint copies.
