Frequently
Asked
Questions
1. "I just added the ring code to my site, and
it doesn't work!"
All right. If you used an alternative ring code, did
you remember to modify the code to include your SITE ID? If not,
that may be the reason. OR... Did you send an e-mail notification
to the Ringmaster saying you are ready to be added to the ring?
If not, that is why. When you submit your site to the BFT Ring,
your application is placed in a queue (a temporary holding place).
The Ringmaster checks the queue each day, then visits the site.
The Ringmaster looks to see if the ring code is there and correct,
if your site adheres to the BFT Ring regulaitons, and if your
site is ready to be added. If something is wrong, then the Ringmaster
will e-mail the site's owner and tell them what is wrong. If
everything is OK, then we add you to the ring.
2."Will I get "hits" while my
site is on hold in queue?"
NO, your site will begin to see additional hits once
it is added to the ring.
3."Will the "next" and "previous"
sites always be the same? Can I get them changed?"
You don't need to worry about changing them, because you will
get new "neighbors" every day! The BFT Ring is set
up to re-arrange itself once a day--so, the Ring is always NEW!
4."What if I don't like the graphic/appearance
of my ring code--can I get a different one?"
You may change your html ring code with any of the alternate
codes we offer at any time. Just carefully follow the directions
found there. For right now, we do ask that you use the BFT Ring
graphic which appears at the top of this page. Also, you MUST
save the graphic and then UPLOAD both the code and the graphic
to your own web site's directory! Please DO NOT link to the one
in our directory. It will slow down the load-time. We will be
offering alternative graphics at a later date.
5. "Can anyone add new members to the ring?"
Anyone can submit a site for consideration, but ONLY the Ringmaster
can add a site to the Ring. Why? We want to check your site out
for compliance with the rules and confirm the code is correct
and working, plus we just want to visit you!
6. "Some other web rings only allow THEIR ring
code on the page or only allow you to belong to THEIR ring. Does
the BFT Ring require this?"
No. Absolutely Not! Genealogy is difficult enough without us
limiting where you can search for information. You may belong
to as many web rings as you wish. All we ask is that OUR ring
code be placed where visitors can easily navigate to the Broughton
information on your site and back to the ring.
That about covers the FAQ's. But in case we didn't answer
your question, feel free to e-mail us at familytree@broughton.net.
