Medical Students as Health and Environmental Promoters

by Salma Galal, M.D.

Health & environment education material used

There were different sources for health educational material used for the target groups. For each target group the student had to look for appropriate material. In case of primary school children simple messages had to be found. Some even made their own material. Main sources of material were the following:

  • WHO books like Prototype Action-oriented School Health Curriculum for Primary Schools (1990)
  • UNICEF booklets on food and its sanitation, pamphlets on vaccination, posters (in Arabic)
  • some material developed by other groups in health education like
  • - TV spots, as that on prevention of schistosomiasis, home accident prevention
  • - booklet developed by the author jointly with ILO on "women & child health"
  • - self developed material by the students or together with the pupils.

As no video device was available in the schools or classes, no video films could be presented. Only if some persons in the community offered their set for playing, it was possible to show them video films on first aid (from Red Crescent), growth and development of a child (from Arab Council for Childhood and Development).
