Cities come of age!

>The growth of factories and trade was popular especially in the NE
>Some of the problems were overcoming unsanitary conditions, disease and threat of fire

>Many developed along rivers and streams because of water power
>New York, Boston and Baltimore grew as the centers of commerce and trade
>In the west, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti and Louisville profitted from their locations on major rivers
>Buildings were made of wood and brick
>Streets and Sidewalks were unpaved
>Barnyard animals often roamed freely in the streets
>Sewers didn't carry waste or dirty water away
>In 1793, yellow fever epidemic in Philidelphia killed thousands of people
>Fire posed another threat to cities
>Few towns or cities had organized fire companies and fires could be disastrous
>Some advantages were that many people left farming because the cities and towns offered a variety of jobs and steady wages
>As cities grew they added libraries, museums and shops that were unavailable in the countryside
>For many people the job attractions of city life outweighed any dangers
