Reign is notable for important legal and administrative reforms. Waged several wars to consolidate and expand his continental possessions. Was so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him. Captured Robert Curthose, his brother, and held him until he (Robert) died. A hard but just ruler. Known as "Beauclerk" or "Lion of Justice". No proof implicating him in the death of his brother, William II Rufus.
