Live Brittania Hotel (Sydney) ... June 22, 2001
Finally the notorious Urban Guerillas hit the
stage and presented the punters with an impressive line up of new songs,
as well as all the classics. The set ranged fromthe dynamic guitar driven
cover of That's Entertainment to the more mellow acoustic numbers,
strikingly ornamented by the didgeridoo, and everything in between.
It's great to see a band that actually has something to say and the new
single is no exception. Big Brother's catchy riffs, upbeat tempo
and lyrics with a social conscience amount to a remarkable piece of songwriting.
If this is anything to go by the upcoming album Soundtrack to
the Revolution should be a real delight. The Guerillas' set was full
of energy and enthusiasm and Ken Stewarts' stage antics were as amusing
as ever. The atmosphere oozing from the the stage was contagious and the
crowd wouldn't let them leave, demanding more (I think they ended up doing
three encores). All this took place in a very cool venue, the Britannia
Hotel, one of the most relaxed pubs in the city. It was fascinating to
see such a wide variety of people, none too interested in the pokies, in
the same place at the same time enjoying a stack of good music.
