What it is

The GFL is a fictional soccer league in Gelsenkirchen (therefore the "G" in "GFL" and the "GE Bowl". Currently there are 16 real teams and 8 fictional teams. It is structured like American professional sports leagues. There are two conferences (North and South) with three divisions each. Each team plays a 16-game schedule, followed by NFL-style playoffs. Scheduling includes games against teams from other divisions within the same conference and interconference games.

How results are determined

By the use of a dice. To simulate team strength, the team with the worse record (for the first four weeks the previous year's records are used) will get one point deducted. A six equals no points. The team records are fairly realistic compared to NFL standings, as is the team strength variation over several years.

Real-life background

I first made fictional sports leagues with a friend at school. First we let our classmates "bet" the results, then we started using the dice. After several years I was bored on a vacation, grabbed a pen, a paper and a dice, and started another league with both real and fictional teams from my hometown, Gelsenkirchen. Later I added several more teams and divisions, and calculated the schedules and standings with Microsoft Excel.

Team backgrounds

The fact that there are both real and fictional teams makes the league a little comical. The real teams include a leading German soccer team, Schalke 04, and non-professional teams. The fictional teams include my unregistered real-life soccer club, Resser Kickers, and both realistic and whacky team names. The names are mostly in traditional German form, although some teams have Ameican-style nicknames.
