Presentation | 1965-1967 Chevrolet Corvette |
When the L78-option Turbo Jet 396 debuted in the Vette in the spring of '65, it was a smash hit. Its extra 150 pounds provided the Sting Ray with a wonderful 51/49 fore/aft weight distribution, quietin Duntov's fears of ill handling. |

Pictures | Although it fit the width of the engine bay, the 396 required a new bulged hood for clearance, which gave the car a powerful, distinctive look. |
With optional side-pipes, the 396 Corvette looked and sounded sinister, and it produced 425 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 415 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. The 396 was smaller-bore version of the 427 "mystery" engine that first ran at Daytona in '63. |
