Assignment 5 Part1: Coffee Sites Comparison

Original vs New Coffee Sites

1. Intro

Between two Coffee Sites, the Original Coffee Site and the New one, there are several differences. To contrast, I'll focus on the differences with 3 conditions such as picture and background design, fonts, and links.

2. Picture and Background Design

On the "for the coffee lover" page, the Original Coffee Site has its picture and the back ground design less harmonious than the new one. Coffee cup picture has its own background color, which is white, and the back ground color of the whole page doesn't match. It seems better with similar color on the new coffee site. Each web page of the original coffee site has all different back ground color and pattern. And it ruins unity of the web image. Picture on the "Coffee lover test" page, there is a picture on the page opposite to each other. though I think their is not a big difference between these two sites, it seems that the original one is better for its picture on the right side, because with the writings on the left and the picture on that spot makes the balance of the page. Both pages have the back ground images clearly match well with their pictures. The worst match of picture and the back ground image is the "Quotes from olden times about coffee" page of the original site. Darkish brown back ground image makes the writings hard to read and the picture seems darker. From the "Coffee lovers unite" of the original site and the "Other coffee sites" of the new one, similar to the "for the coffee lover" page, the picture has its own white back ground image. I think it is much harmonious with the back ground image of the new site.

2. Fonts

From the original coffee lover site there is no change of font face between the title and the body. Only the size and the boldness of the font face is different between the title and the body. From the new one, there is a difference between the title and the body. The Font face of the title is Comic Sans MS and it seems to be more emphasized. The location of the writing on the "Quotes from olden times about coffee", the old one is mostly inclined to its one corner, left side when the new one has its writing centered. There is also a difference of width of gap between the title and the body. It is more stable with a few more <br>tags that it prevents from the writing all crammed into a corner.

3. Links

I think it is more fashionable to have its links on the bottom parts centered than the list of links crammed into left corner. Original coffee site has its links not unified with its location. It is better to have its contents unified when making a web site. The original web site has its links to the main page which means, when you click on the links, the page turns to the other page. This makes the viewer to click the back button each time to go back to the home page which is quite annoying. In contrast, the new web page has its links targeted to the other links and when clicking on it, a new window for the targeted site opens. It is more convenience for the viewer to have the target page that she could just click on X button to return to the home page. There are also a problem on the original web site, two links to the other sites; Caffeinated Magazine and Epicure Exchange do not open properly. The new one has no problem with that kind of problem.

4. Conclusion

As contrasting both original coffee site and the new coffee site, I found that it is better to unify the back ground image rather than varying the color of it. It is also sensible when matching the picture and the back ground color or pattern. Fonts can be differenciated from the title to the body. The different font face emphasizes the title of it and that catches an eye of the viewer better. It is better to give some space to the gap between the title and the body. The title and the subtitle are better to be located in the center.
